About Golden Beach
Golden Beach is a coastal suburb of Caloundra directly south-west of the CBD, with the Pumicestone Passage forming its eastern boundary and a canal running east to west through the suburb into the Pelican Waters canal developments next door. Settlement dates from the late nineteenth century when the land was farmed and grazed, development started in the 1950s, and growth was rapid from the 1960s into the 1980s. It was named by Caloundra Golden Beach Ltd, the developers of the area, and Golden Beach State School opened on 24 January 1983.
The water itself is unusually dynamic here. The long sandspit at the northern tip of Bribie Island shelters Golden Beach from the Coral Sea, but this section of the passage is very narrow and less than two metres deep, with shifting sand and mud banks. During storms, waves can cross the sandspit into the passage, and in December 2020 wild weather began cutting channels through it.
